Retainers

Retainers are used to maintain the optimal position of your teeth after orthodontic treatment is complete.

Retainers keep teeth in their corrected position while your bones and soft tissues adapt to the new position. Nowadays patients are advised after orthodontic treatment that teeth need to be retained long-term to reduce undesirable tooth movement and the need for re-treatment. Removable retainers are eventually worn at night and are an easy routine once braces are finished.

There are several types of Retainers available. The most common are;

Bonded Retainers – this Retainer is particularly useful for teeth that were poorly aligned and crooked or rotated prior to starting treatment. These may be bonded in place behind the front upper or lower teeth to reduce tooth movement after Orthodontic treatment. They are also used to keep spaces closed between the upper teeth.

Invisible Retainers - a popular removable Retainer, this is used for the upper and lower teeth to maintain alignment and keep spaces closed.

Plate Retainer – a sturdy removable Retainer, this is used on either the upper or lower teeth. This type is often preferred after expansion of the upper arch.
