Why is Oral Hygiene so important?
Tooth Decay, and permanent stains on the surface of your teeth can occur if patients eat excessive amounts of sugary or acidic foods or do not brush their teeth properly. Although these problems can occur without Orthodontic treatment, when you are wearing braces the risk is far greater because there are more places for plaque to get trapped.
The Importance of Brushing…
When you first get your braces you will notice that it is much harder to keep your teeth clean. Food can become lodged between the braces, the wires and your teeth, and can only be removed by careful brushing and interproximal cleaning. It is essential to brush your teeth at least three times a day – straight after breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Top Brushing Tips…
- As we mentioned above, it is essential to brush your teeth at least three times a day.
- Use a soft toothbrush with a small head for cleaning in and around your braces.
- When brushing, move the toothbrush backwards and forwards in small motions above and below the braces.
- Aim the toothbrush towards the wires and towards the gums.
- Cleaning between your teeth and braces is also important and should be done daily. We recommend the use of re-usable interproximal brushes. We recommend using a neutral fluoride mouthrinse and Tooth Mousse to strengthen your enamel.
